We are building a living, responsive command system that turns information into protection, at the speed the oceans demand.
Today we are outlining the next evolution of our in-house digital infrastructure, the WDA Command Network, a secure, connected ecosystem linking crowd-sourced intelligence, unmanned systems (USVs and drones), patrol vessels, and shore teams.
Because we develop everything in-house, from our custom Command CMS to secure APIs and mission tools, we can iterate faster than any agency-dependent organization. This is not theory. This is how we will defend whales in real time. Our system is worth around $400,000 in development costs if billed to another organization
Picture this, a WDA USV detects a whaling vessel operating in protected waters. No drone is currently aboard the USV, but a large WDA patrol vessel (such as our APV-60) is within range with four drones on board.
Here’s what happens next:
The USV sends an immediate secure alert through the Command Network. The alert creates a live mission thread in our operations dashboard. Our team identifies the need for real-time whale identification support. Within minutes, developers (on shore or aboard the vessel) build and test a lightweight edge AI module using our onboard database of over 5,000–10,000 whale images.
The new module is deployed over-the-air to the drones. The drones launch, detect whales in the area, process images in milliseconds, classify species, assess behavior, and stream prioritized data back to the crew.
Crew members now have real-time intelligence on species, estimated threat level, and recommended response, and estomated time until whalers are on station. They can adjust tactics accordingly, whether it’s non-lethal disruption, documentation, or protective positioning, with full awareness of the whale’s conservation status.
Even more powerful, possibly verified citizen reporters who submit confirmed sightings can receive temporary, secure access to live camera feeds and notifications via email or text for the duration of the operation. This feature can be activated in under two hours because our entire stack is built and controlled in-house.
Traditional conservation groups often rely on WordPress, external agencies, and third-party tools. That model creates delays, high costs, and limited flexibility.
Our custom Command CMS, secure intelligence portal, and backend systems are purpose-built for marine defense. New features, security patches, and mission-specific modules deploy in hours, not weeks or months. Resources that would go to agencies are redirected to ships, crew, radar systems (WAPS), and frontline operations.
Every layer is hardened and tailored to our needs, critical when handling sensitive maritime intelligence. This approach allows us to treat our digital systems the same way we treat our vessels: as extensions of the mission, fully under our control.
